In Neuhaus’s book, she talks about
the gender associations we make in regards to cooking, but these are starting
to shift in today’s society as men are playing a larger role in food
preparation. The video we saw in class on how a man properly cooks “pork butt”
while still looking cool is a lot different than the image we have of women
cooking. However when these cooking shows are going to be viewed by an
audience, this raw nature is a lot more appealing, especially to male viewers,
and opens up the world of cooking and entertainment to a whole new demographic.
This raw personality and entertainment pertaining to food brings to mind a
certain group of “gentlemen” who make monstrous creations of meat and fat and
sugar that appeal to our primitive nature. This group is known as EpicMealTime
and they have their own “cooking” show on YouTube (Link Below). In terms of a
cooking show, they do show the original uncooked ingredients first, and how to
prepare them, but the methods they use along with their attitude is definitely
not conventional. In addition to just cooking the food, they eat, or should I say
devour their creations, usually with a copious amount of alcohol involved as
well. You might wonder, well who cares about these guys and their messy eating
habits, but over a period of time they have established some credibility so to
say, with over two million subscribers and each of their videos having a couple
million views each.

This is an interesting find. Do you really think, though, that men and women are so different that they way they cook and they way they consume their food needs to be so spectacularly different? I'd be curious to hear more of your thoughts on the matter.
